Field trips

1) Armorican Massif: From blueschists to migmatites

Strongly contrasted metamorphic rocks are exposed and juxtaposed along the coast of southern Brittany. The first day will give an insight into the world-famous blueschist-facies rocks of Ile de Groix. During the second day will be examined the partial melting processes and syntectonic granite intrusions. Migmatites and blueschists are juxtaposed along an extensional detachment. A final stop will be made along the South-Armorican shear zone in one of the type localities of the S/C structures.

Start: Saturday 6 june 2015, 14:00 Rennes
End: Monday 8 june 2015, ?18:00 Rennes

Number of participants: 24 (first-come, first-served)
Cost: 250 €
The cost includes transport from and back to Rennes, ferry to Groix, dinner and accommodation in double rooms on Saturday 6 june, breakfast, lunch and accommodation on Sunday 7 june and breakfast and lunch on Monday 8 june. The dinner on Sunday 7/6 is not included so that the participants may enjoy the freedom to explore the night life on Ile de Groix. A printed guide book, published in "Geology of France and surrounding areas" and available online in open access, will be handed to the participants.

2) Armorican Massif: Nappe stacking and oceanic suture zone

The goal of the excursion is to give an overview of the nappe stacking in the south-eastern part of the Armorican Massif. The first day will present the Upper Allochthon (sedimentary sequences of Ordovician to Carboniferous age), with Bohemian affinities (Chalonnes, Ancenis area). The second day will be devoted to the deepest units (Lower and Middle Allochthons) - in particular the Champtoceaux Complex, displaying an inverted metamorphic sequence (MCT), eclogites as well as an ophiolite sequence. This section will allow a discussion of 1) the location of the main oceanic sutures, and 2) correlations with similar units from northern Spain to Bohemia.

Start: Thursday 11 june 2015, 13:00 Rennes
End: Friday 12 june 2015, ?19:00 Rennes

Number of participants: 24 (first-come, first-served)
Cost: 160 €
The cost includes transport from and back to Rennes, lunch, dinner and accommodation in double rooms on Thursday 11 june and breakfast and lunch on Friday 12 june, as well as a printed guide book, published in "Geology of France and surrounding areas" and available online in open access later.

3) NW Iberian Massif (Galicia): The nappe stack from the Autochthon to the Upper Allochthon

The field trip will visit the allochthonous complexes of Cabo Ortegal, Órdenes and Malpica-Tui, in northwestern Galicia, where units of the three allochthons are well represented, as well as localities in the Autochthon and Parautochthon. The first day could be devoted to the Autochthon and Parautochthon around the Cabo Ortegal Complex, visiting classic localities of the Ollo de Sapo Fm. as well as Late Ordovician diamictites. The second and perhaps third day we would visit the Cabo Ortegal Complex, where rocks of oceanic affinity (Middle Allochthon) and HP-HT units of the Upper Allochthon are well represented. The fourth day, a cross section would be made across the ophiolitic to uppermost allochthon complexes in the SE part of the Órdenes Complex, and the fifth day will be devoted to the Lower Allochthon in the Malpica-Tui Complex.

The Iberian field trip will be organized in June 2016. More information can be found here.
